Nicole's Classes: Art Weekend SLC, and Very Fun Babies

I'm having a great time, taking a bunch of Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Blogging classes here at Art Weekend SLC! I was here all day yesterday, and I'm here all day today. It's a lot of fun, but man, I've never left the kiddos this long. It's so weird. I think the longest I've ever left my kids is a few hours. It's not that I'm worried about their safety or well-being, it's just that I'm missing stuff. That, and I totally miss the chubby cheek slobbery kisses, and watching their little wheels turn.

And boy are those wheels turning. Beckham crawled up on my lap the other day, when I was reading a novel, and looked at the book for a second, and then put his squishy little finger on the page and said "A!!" Sure enough, he was pointing at a capital A in the teeny tiny text. I was so proud, and of course think he's a genius. This little hobby of his has now evolved to finding B, R, D, and sonetimes C (as in Cookie!). He's also super into puzzles. He can tell me several numbers (zero, one, seven, six, nine, and eight). And well, I think that's pretty great--cause he's only 22 months old! :)

Lily wants to be potty trained SO bad. I think I'm going to give it a shot this weekend, because otherwise, I'll be cleaning my carpets shortly. She's figured out how to undress and remove all her clothing and "coverings" *ahem* and well, that could get a little less than sanitary. Once she's naked, she runs around saying "naked! lily! toilet! naked!" And then dissolving into a puddle of giggles. In addition, she's taken to sitting on a pillow, putting her baby sitting on one side of her, and her beloved monkey on the other side, and reading to them. She'll get the book out and tell them all the objects in the book that she recognizes, and will keep doing it for up to 30 minutes.

In addition, they're both able to say 3 syllable words/phrases, including, but not limited to "ballet shoes" "octagon" "rectangle" "basketball" "football""double-you" "happyhalloween!" and "trick-or-treat!".

Obviously, I miss my kids. I do not, however, miss my laundry. :S

More later.

Mwa!
April

PS In other news, I've lost 15 lbs. Only 12 to go! :D
PPS The picture is from halloween. My kids were garden gnomes...I'll have to post a picture of Beck with his real gnome hat--cause it has a beard and is hysterical. Isn't Lily the cutest little spritely gnome?

Contest!

(photo from Lila's blog post about the contest)

I know I haven't posted in a while, and I'm planning a more personal post in the (near) future, but for now, I thought I'd tell you about a designer-friend of mine who has a beautiful fabric line coming out soon, and she's giving away some of the fabric on her blog (which was designed by yours truly :)) Head on over to her blog to enter her contest!

Sewing for toddlers...

There's a super cute tutorial over at the Moda Bake Shop for a little girls' skirt, and a matching boys' shirt...if you're into sewing, go check it out! (I'm going to have to be THAT mom, and make matching outfits for L & B...it would just be so cute!).

My first quilt...(and my latest creation!)

Camille is having a fun little "Parade of Quilts". She challenged us quilters to post our first quilt, and the most recent quilt we've made. Sounded like fun...

So, here's the first quilt I ever made. (note: these quilts actually are rectangles, not weird trapezoids, like the pictures look. I just don't know how to take pictures...Also, lighting at 11pm in my basement is less than stellar. Who've thought?) It was an assignment for a sewing class I dropped in to for the last semester of high school (1999)...when I dropped my AP Calculus and AP Chemistry classes (another story for another day.) I knew how to sew already, but had never quilted. I didn't pick the fabric--my sweet Mom got it for me, even though things were pretty tight. (My parents were separated at the time, and of course, I had no idea how expensive fabric can get, as a self-absorbed teenager...). I made the quilt top for the grade, got an A, and put it away, unfinished.

About 5 years later, I showed it to my mother-in-law, and she put it on the quilting frames and we (she, mostly) hand quilted it. Not sure if you can tell, but this sucka has like 2' of poly batting in it...which was a menace to hand quilt, to put it lightly. But we persisted, and finally finished it. These days, it works quite nicely as a play mat for young babies...because well, it's very padded.

Fast forward 10 years (from the start date, that is) and I've just finished stippling my very first original design. I was hoping to finish it tonight, but I ran out of thread. I have made quite a few other quilts, but they were all from patterns. Ironically, this one is made (90%) from Camille's fabric line, Cotton Blossoms for Moda. It's been interesting, and lots of seam ripping, and I've learned a ton. Thinner batting is my friend. So is machine quilting. Always have more thread than you think you will need. Always buy a little extra fabric...it's easy to accidentally cut crooked. And so much more. But it's late, and I'm tired, and I need to post this in time for Camille to see it...

Oh! But what do you think? Do you like it?

Guess what...

my little brother taught my babies?

Honestly, they were starting to figure it out themselves, but still.

We haven't been in the backyard since.

Anyone know a contraption that will keep 18-month-olds off a slide?

Me either.

It's time to get creative.

I'm in love.

New blog theme.

My very own Beckleberry Finn.

A little girl who chooses a pair of pants to bring with her as a toy so she can "practice." (Nevermind matching).

Windowsill herbs.

Lime hand soap.

It's only 11:30?

Already this morning:

  • Dirty Diaper finger painting on the carpet
  • Pulverized goldfish cracker sandbox on the aforementioned carpet
  • Beckham standing on Lily's head
  • Lily screaming (you would too) about said standing
  • Spinning in circles until they're both so dizzy they collide
  • ...and much, much more!
You'd think I was off somewhere while they did all this, but no. I was RIGHT THERE. Turns out they're just inhumanly fast. And destructive.

I think I just saw the Mother of the Year award fly by. With some presidents.
